Why We Test at The Performance Lab (and Why You Shouldn’t Stress About It)
Every few months at The Performance Lab, we finish a training block with something a little different: Testing Week.
But don’t worry — this isn’t about proving anything or maxing out every lift. It’s about checking in with where you’re at, seeing what’s improved, and using that info to shape your next block of training.
It’s about training with more intention, not pressure.
What is Testing Week?
Testing Week is your chance to measure your progress after a full training block. It’s built into your sessions with structured warm-ups, clear standards, and coach support.
We’ll be testing key markers across strength, power, and conditioning, giving you and your coach data to personalise your progress and goals.
It’s not about ego lifting.
It’s about gathering useful, objective feedback.
Not Keen on Testing? No Problem.
We get it — not everyone wants or needs to test right now.
During Testing Week, there’s always the option to:
Adapt the test session into a quality training session with similar movements
Train as normal with slightly adjusted intensity
Opt out entirely from certain lifts or movements, especially if you're injured or not feeling it
Just let your coach know — we’ll guide you through the right approach for you.
Whether you’re testing or just training through the week, you’re still progressing.
Why Testing Matters
You can’t track progress without a starting point.
Testing helps us:
Establish clear personal benchmarks
Coach you more effectively
Add direction and purpose to future training
It’s not about being the strongest or the fittest — it’s about your journey, and using data to shape it.
“But I Feel Nervous About Testing…”
That’s completely normal. Feeling a little pressure just means you care.
But here’s the key: Testing Week is a snapshot, not a verdict.
There are no passes, fails, or gold stars — just effort, learning, and growth.
We simply ask that you show up, give it your best on the day, and take pride in doing something most people avoid: checking in and levelling up.
What If I Don’t Hit a PB?
Then you’re in the same boat as 95% of people.
Unless you’re brand new to training, you probably won’t PB everything. And that’s totally okay.
Progress isn’t just measured in kilos. It’s found in better form, improved confidence, and consistency across the block.
Celebrate the work, not just the weight.
What Happens After Testing?
After Testing Week, we kick off a new training block — built using the data from your results.
This gives us the chance to:
Adjust weights and targets
Sharpen your focus
Help you move towards new goals with better clarity
Take a moment to reflect:
What do you want to improve?
What did you learn about your training this block?
Where can you direct your energy next?
Testing isn’t the finish line — it’s your launchpad for the next block.
Final Thought
Whether you test everything, just one lift, or choose to train through with modifications — you're still moving forward.
We’re here to support your goals, at your pace, with purpose.
