Build Or Burn?

Build or Burn: Making the Right Call at the End of Your Session

One of the most common questions we get on the gym floor is simple “What should I do at the end… Build or Burn?”
The answer is it depends. Not on what your mate is doing, not on what feels hardest in the moment, but on what your overall week looks like.
If you start thinking of your training as a full week instead of just one session, the decision becomes much easier.

When to Choose Burn

Burn is your chance to get the heart rate up, build your engine, and sweat a bit.

If you are someone who is not doing classes, not getting many steps in, and not really pushing your conditioning outside of your SGPT sessions, then Burn is probably where you need to be.

It helps improve your fitness levels, supports fat loss goals, and gives you that feeling of leaving the gym knowing you have worked hard. Burn is a great option if you

Want to improve your overall fitness Feel like your sessions are missing that “sweaty” element Are chasing fat loss and want to increase calorie output

Do not have much cardio elsewhere in your week It is also just a solid way to build resilience and push yourself mentally.
When to Choose Build

Build is where you slow things down and focus on getting better. If you are already doing a couple of classes a week, going for runs, or playing sport, your body is already getting plenty of conditioning work. What you need then is more quality strength work, not more fatigue. Build gives you the chance to improve movement quality, build strength, and actually progress your lifts without being rushed or exhausted.

Build is a great option if you
Are doing 2 or 3 classes per week

Are running or playing sport regularly
Want to get stronger and improve technique
Feel like you are always tired or rushing your lifts
Need more focus on control, range of motion, and execution
This is where long term progress is made. Better positions, better control, more confidence under the bar.

 A Final Thought
Not every session needs to leave you on the floor. Sometimes progress looks like lifting better, moving better, and feeling stronger. Other times it looks like pushing the pace and getting uncomfortable.
Both Build and Burn have their place.

The key is choosing the one that matches your week, not your mood. If you are ever unsure, grab a coach and ask. That is what we are there for.
